FAQ
What do I need to know about having a fossil prepared?
It takes time. Not all fossils have perfect preservation, some may even require restoration to fulfill the aesthetic expectations for a fossil to go on display.
Not all preparators specialize in the same fossils or localities. The preparators at Fossil Oasis are always willing to take on new fossils from unique formations. We will always be honest and transparent about whether or not a fossil is beyond the scope of our preparation practices, or requires different tools to accomplish the desired result.
It's likely we have a waitlist for our services, please respect this and understand we run on a "first come, first served" system in fairness to all our clients.
If we believe the fossil to be unethically sourced, the service will be refused. Make sure you understand your local laws for fossil excavation and ownership.
What is a fossil?
Fossils are the remains or traces of organisms that were once alive. From the massive bones of dinosaurs to the delicate impression of a fern frond, fossils come in all shapes and sizes. Fossils that are the remains of an actual organism, such as a shell, leaf, or bone, are known as body fossils. Those fossils that record the action of an organism, such as a footprint or burrow, are known as trace fossils. Paleontologists study fossils to help understand the evolution and the history of life on Earth. Fossils also tell us about ancient ecosystems and climates, and how climate change can affect life.
