D. dentatus resembles modern herring and is an ancient species. Fossil records of Diplomystus exist in China, and the last Ellimmichthyiformes member vanished in the middle Eocene.
D. dentatus is the second most common fossil fish in Fossil Lake, ranging from embryonic to adult sizes. Smaller specimens are more abundant in mid-lake deposits, suggesting open-water spawning. Its upturned mouth indicates surface feeding, often with other fish caught inside, including fellow D. dentatus.
