Cave bears, an extinct bear species from around 24,000 years ago, earned their name due to the abundance of fossils found in caves, reflected in their scientific name, Ursus spelaeus. Unlike modern bears, cave bears probably frequented caves extensively, not just during hibernation. Their intriguing past captivates human interest, with their large skulls initially mistaken for dragon bones, leading some caves with abundant fossils to be dubbed "dragon caves." Despite their imposing size and teeth, cave bears were likely primarily herbivorous, with researchers suggesting they predominantly fed on tough vegetation, although they were likely omnivorous when opportunities arose.
